Borrowing policies

This policy sets forth parameters of eligibility to use interlibrary loan services, defines the scope of interlibrary loan services available, and outlines the responsibilities of patrons who utilize interlibrary loan services.

Compliance with Copyright Law

By registering to use interlibrary loan services and submitting requests for materials, users accept responsibility for complying with United States Copyright Law.

Scope: what services are provided?

Scope of Interlibrary Loan Services

Interlibrary loan borrowing requests can be placed for items which are:

  • Not available in Brandeis collections.
  • Owned by Brandeis but checked out or missing
  • On Reserve: items on Reserve may be requested by students writing Senior Honors theses, graduate students, and faculty.

Please let ILL staff know in the NOTES field of the ILL request form if you are requesting an item that is checked out, missing, or on Reserve.

Patron responsibilities

Patron Responsibilities

It is very important to return Interlibrary Loan materials on time. Failure to return materials on time damages Brandeis's relationship with other libraries and compromises Brandeis's ability to borrow materials from them in the future.

  •  Borrowers are responsible for Interlibrary Loan material from the time it is picked up at the loans and returns desk at Goldfarb Library until the time it is returned to the loans and returns desk.
  • If Interlibrary Loan material is not returned within the loan period set by the lending library and is 30 days or more overdue, the borrower's Interlibrary Loan account will be blocked and they will not be able to request materials until the item(s) in question is returned and/or any replacement costs or late-fees are paid.
  • If an item borrowed through Interlibrary Loan is lost, the borrower is responsible for the replacement cost of the material as determined by the lending library. Invoices will be forwarded to borrowers. When interlibrary loan lost book replacement costs are not paid by the end of the spring semester, the invoiced amount will be transferred to the borrower's library account, which is then billed through the bursar's office.

Delivery of items

Delivery of items

Physical media: All borrowing activity involving books, microforms, and other physical media is strictly library-to-library. Requests for physical media can be placed from any location, but items are delivered only to the Brandeis University campus where they are made available for pickup and/or use at the Goldfarb Library.

Electronic media: Copies of journal articles and other electronic copies are delivered electronically and made accessible to eligible ILL users worldwide via any Internet connection. When an article cannot be delivered electronically, due to size or quality, a paper copy will be available on the ILL hold shelf at the Goldfarb Library loans and returns desk.
